Yesterday, Senator Booker introduced the Do No Harm Act in the Senate with 29 original cosponsors.
I know you’ve heard from the American Humanist Association a lot already about this bill this Congress. Earlier this year, we asked you to reach out to your representative in the House in support of the bill. Then, we asked you to join us for our largest lobby day to date to meet with your members of Congress to discuss its importance. Today, we’re asking you to take two minutes to reach out to your senators and (again) to your representative to ask them to support the Do No Harm Act now that it has been introduced in the Senate.
As we all know, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) is being misused to discriminate against religious minorities, women, LGBTQ people, and others under the guise of religious freedom, including:
Taxpayer funded foster agencies denying qualified potential parents because they are the “wrong” religion or LGBTQ;
Employers withholding employees insurance coverage for birth control, otherwise mandated under federal law;
Government contractors discriminating against potential employees;
… and much more. The Do No Harm Act is our solution, and it’s simple. It would restore RFRA to its original intent and ensure that religion cannot be used to justify harm against others.
Tell Congress to support the Do No Harm Act today!
If you already reached out to your representative in the House earlier this year, please still take action now. This time, our message will also go to your senators (and they need to hear from you today!). Also, repetition helps; and is often the key to legislative wins. There is momentum building around the bill, but it won’t advance without consistent nudges, pokes, and proddings.
