November 6, 2019: The Center for Freethought Equality is celebrating widespread gains for humanists and other nontheist political candidates yesterday.
The Freethought Equality Fund Political Action Committee (PAC) is proud of the steady increase in openly humanist, atheist, agnostic, and nonreligious candidates who ran for office this year. The Freethought Equality Fund PAC is affiliated with the Center for Freethought Equality, which is the political and advocacy arm of the American Humanist Association.
“With the election of more openly humanist candidates our democracy is inching closer to full representation.” said Roy Speckhardt, executive director of the Center for Freethought Equality. Speckhardt continued, “The progress we are seeing is evidence that the stigma against nontheists is fading, a trend we hope to accelerate through continued outreach and advocacy.”
The Freethought Equality Fund applauds the successes of newly elected atheist, humanist, and agnostic candidates, including Karl Frisch, who won a seat on the Fairfax County, Virginia School Board, and Danny Choriki, who won a seat on the Billings, Montana City Council.
Humanist candidates who won re-election include Assemblymember Andrew Zwicker of New Jersey, Mayor Bob Scott, of Franklin, North Carolina, and Jason Kasuncik, a city councilor in Eastlake, Ohio.
