As a federal political action committee, the focus of the Center for Freethought Equality Political Action Committee is Congressional candidates; however, running for – and winning – state and local seats is essential to increasing the visibility and political clout of the humanist and atheist community. Our PAC is proud to endorse candidates in Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming for the 2024 elections. Kamala Harris ran for President of the United States. Her election was critical to protect our civil liberties, prevent the implementation of Project 2025, and end the white Christian Nationalist’s anti-democratic, bigoted, anti-science, racist, misogynistic, xenophobic, and homophobic crusade. Vice President Harris is a Baptist. Her running mate Minnesota Governor Tim Walz is a Lutheran.
Patty Contreras won re-election to the Arizona State House in District 12. She was unopposed in the top-two Democratic primary on July 30 (2 candidates - 2 seats). In the general election, she finished first with 37% of the vote with the top-two candidates winning the race. Rep. Contreras is Catholic and an ally of our community.
Haley Creighton ran for the Arizona State Senate in District 7. She won the Democratic primary on July 30 with 54% of the vote and earned 35% of the vote in the general election. The Republican incumbent, Wendy Rogers, won the 2022 election with 64% of the vote. Ms. Creighton is an agnostic.
Melody Hernandez ran for the Arizona State Senate in District 8. She withdrew from the race on April 15, 2024. She is currently completing her second term in the Arizona State House. Rep. Hernandez is an agnostic.
Juan Mendez ran for the Arizona State House in District 8. He previously served two terms in the Arizona State House (2013-2016) and is completing his second term in the State Senate. He came in third in the top-two Democratic primary on July 30 with 32% of the vote. Sen. Mendez is an atheist.
Analise Ortiz won election to the Arizona State Senate in District 24. She is currently completing her second term in the Arizona State House. She won the Democratic primary on July 30 with 86% of the vote and was unopposed in the general election. Rep. Ortiz is an agnostic.
Judy Schwiebert ran for the Arizona State Senate in District 2. She is currently completing her second term in the Arizona State House. She was unopposed in the Democratic primary on July 30 and earned 47% of the vote in the general election. Rep. Schwiebert is an ally of our community.
Amish Shah ran for the U.S. Congress in Arizona’s 1st District. He won the Democratic primary on July 30 with 24% of the vote in a crowded 6-person race. The Republican incumbent and earned 48% of the vote in the general election. David Schweikert, won re-election in 2022 with just 50.4% of the vote. Dr. Shah is Jain and is an ally of our community.
Stephanie Stahl Hamilton won re-election to the Arizona State House in District 21. She finished second in the top-two Democratic primary on July 30 with 29% of the vote. In the general election, she also finished second with 35% of the vote. The top two candidates won the seats. Rep. Stahl Hamilton is a Christian and an ally of our community.
Kwami Abdul-Bey ran for the Arkansas House of Representatives in District 69. He challenged Republican incumbent David Ray who won re-election in 2022 with 69% of the vote. Mr. Abdul-Bey was unopposed in the Democratic primary on March 5 and earned 28.6% of the vote in the general election. He is a Unitarian Universalist and an agnostic.
Robin McCray ran for the Arkansas House of Representatives in District 50. He challenged Republican incumbent Zack Gramlich who won re-election in 2022 with 63% of the vote. Mr. McCray was unopposed in the Democratic primary on March 5 and earned 36% of the vote in the general election. He is spiritual but secular/agnostic.
Konstantine Anthony won re-election to the Burbank (CA) City Council. Earlier in 2024, he ran for Los Angeles County Supervisor for the 5th District. He came in third of five candidates with 9% of the vote in the top-two nonpartisan primary election on March 5. He was the Mayor of Burbank (CA) and has been a member of the Burbank City Council since 2020. Councilmember Anthony is an atheist.
Mike Barkley ran for the U.S. Congress in California’s 5th District. He challenged the Republican incumbent Tom McClintock. In 2022, Mr. Barkley earned 39% of the vote against the incumbent, and 39% again in 2024. He is a Presbyterian and ally of our community.
Joshua Bocanegra ran for the U.S. Congress in California’s 30th District. In a very crowded top two primary, he finished twelfth of fifteen candidates with 1% of the vote on March 5. Mr. Bocanegra is an atheist.
Julia Brownley won re-election to the U.S. Congress in California’s 26th District. She was challenged by three candidates in the top two primary on March 5. She finished first with 51% of the vote. In the general election, she won with 55% of the vote. Rep. Brownley is Episcopalian and an ally of our community.
Joy Frew ran for the California State Assembly 75th District. There were six candidates in the top two primary on March 5. She finished fifth with 8% of the vote. Ms. Frew is an atheist.
Laura Friedman won election the U.S. Congress in California’s 30th District. She finished first in the very crowded (15 candidates) top two primary on March 5 with 30% of the vote and 68.6% of the vote in the general election. She has been a member of the California State Assembly since 2017. Ms. Friedman is Jewish and an ally of our community.
Robert Garcia won re-election to the U.S. Congress in California’s 42nd District. He was challenged by three candidates in the top two primary on March 5. He finished in first with 50% of the vote and won with 66% of the vote in the general election. Rep. Garcia is Catholic and an ally of our community.
Jimmy Gomez won re-election to the U.S. Congress in California’s 34th District. He was challenged by four candidates in the top two primary on March 5. He finished in first with 51% of the vote. In the general election, he won with 56% of the vote. Rep. Gomez is Catholic and an ally of our community.
Jared Huffman won re-election to the U.S. Congress in California’s 2nd District. He was challenged by four candidates in the top two primary on March 5. He finished in first with 73% of the vote and earned 73% in the general election too. Rep. Huffman is a co-chair of the Congressional Freethought Caucus and the only member of Congress to publicly identify with our community. He is a humanist and agnostic.
Dom Jones ran for the California State Assembly 72nd District. In the top-two primary on March 5, she earned 32% of the vote against the Republican incumbent Diana Dixon. In the general election Jones earned 40% of the vote. Ms. Jones is a humanist.
Alex Lee won re-election to the California State Assembly 24th District. He was challenged by two candidates in the top two primary on March 5. He finished in first with 66% of the vote. In the general election he won with 64% of the vote. Assemblymember Lee is an agnostic.
Zoe Lofgren won re-election to the U.S. Congress in California’s 18th District. She was challenged by four candidates in the top two primary on March 5. She finished in first with 52% of the vote, and in the general election won with 66% of the vote. Rep. Lofgren is a Lutheran and an ally of our community.
Kevin Mullin won re-election to the U.S. Congress in California’s 15th District. He had one opponent in the top two primary on March 5, and finished in first with 73% of the vote. In the general election he won with 74% of the vote. Rep. Mullin is Catholic and an ally of our community.
Courtney Najera ran for the U.S. Congress in California’s 30th District. In a very crowded top two primary on March 5, she finished in eleventh of fourteen candidates with 1% of the vote. Ms. Najera is an atheist.
George Nickle ran for the West Hollywood City Council. He is a member of the West Hollywood Public Safety Commission. He challenged one of two city council incumbents. Mr. Nickle is an atheist.
Darshana Patel won election to the California State Assembly 76th District. She is currently President of the Poway Unified School District. In the top-two primary on March 5, she finished second of three candidates with 32% of the vote and will move on to the November 5 general election. Dr. Patel is a Hindu and ally of our community.
Karina Quintanilla won re-election to the Palm Desert City (CA) Council in District 1. She won the general election with 53% of the vote. Mayor Quintanilla is a recovering Catholic and a secular American.
Tara Sreekrishnan ran for the California State Assembly in District 26. She is a member of the Santa Clara School Board. She had five opponents in the top two primary on March 5, and finished second with 27% of the vote. In the general election she earned 44% of the vote. Ms. Sreekrishnan is a Hindu American and an ally of our community.
Eric Swalwell won re-election to the U.S. Congress in California’s 14th District. He had three challengers in the top two primary on March 5, and finished in first with 67% of the vote. In the general election he won with 64% of the vote. Rep. Swalwell is Christian and an ally of our community.
Dulce Vasquez ran for the California State Assembly 57th District. In a crowded five candidate top two primary on March 5, she finished in third with 14% of the vote. Ms. Vasquez is an agnostic.
Judy Amabile won election to the Colorado State Senate in District 18. Rep. Amabile has served in Colorado State House since 2021. She is now running for an open Senate seat. She won against a challenger in the Democratic primary on June 25 with 77% of the vote. In the general election she won with 92% of the vote. Rep. Amabile is a recovering Catholic and an atheist.
Lisa Feret won election to the Colorado State House in District 24. She was unopposed in the Democratic primary on June 25 and won with 57% of the vote in the general election. She was a member of the Arvada City Council. Ms. Feret is a recovering Catholic and an ally of our community.
Lorena Garcia won re-election to the Colorado State House in District 35. She has served in Colorado State House since 2023. Rep. Garcia was unopposed in the Democratic primary on June 25, and won the general election with 65% of the vote. She is nonreligious.
Cathy Kipp won election to the Colorado State Senate in District 14. She has served in Colorado State House since 2019. Rep. Kipp was unopposed in the Democratic primary on June 25 and won the general election with 70% of the vote. This was an open seat. Rep. Kipp does not belong to any organized religion.
Bryan Lindstrom ran for the Colorado State House in District 36. He lost to an opponent in the Democratic primary on June 25, earning 38% of the vote. This is an open seat. The Democratic incumbent won with 64% of the vote in 2022. Mr. Lindstrom is an agnostic.
Karen McCormick won re-election to the Colorado State House in District 11. She has served in Colorado State House since 2021. Rep. McCormick was unopposed in the Democratic primary on June 25 and won the general election with 71% of the vote. She is spiritual but not religious.
Sarah McKeen ran for the Colorado State House in District 51. She was unopposed in the Democratic primary on June 25 and earned 48% of the vote in the general election. She challenged a Republican incumbent who was appointed to office last year. Ms. McKeen is non-religious.
John Padora ran for the U.S. Congress in Colorado’s 4th District. He lost the Democratic primary on June 25 finishing third of three candidates, earning 14% of the vote. The Republican incumbent Ken Buck is not running for re-election so this is an open seat. Mr. Padora is an agnostic.
Jennifer Parenti withdrew from the race in July 2024. She was running for re-election to the Colorado State House in District 19. She has served in Colorado State House since 2023. Rep. Parenti was unopposed in the Democratic primary on June 25. She is a humanist.
Wyatt Schwendeman-Curtis ran for the Larimer County Clerk and Recorder. He challenged the recently appointed Republican incumbent in the general election earning 43% of the vote. In 2022, he ran for Mayor of Wellington, CO and finished a close second in a three person race. Mr. Schwendeman-Curtis is a humanist.
Rhonda Solis ran for re-election to the Colorado State Board of Education in Congressional District 8. She was unopposed in the Democratic primary on June 25 but earned 47% of the vote in the general election. Previously, she served on the Greeley-Evans School Board from 2014 to 2021. Ms. Solis is spiritual but not religious.
Brianna Titone won re-election to the Colorado State House in District 27. She has served in Colorado State House since 2019. Rep. Titone was unopposed in the Democratic primary on June 25 and won the general election with 58% of the vote. She is spiritual but not religious.
Ethnie Treick ran for the Colorado State House in District 52. She lost to an opponent in the Democratic primary on June 25, earning 38% of the vote. This is an open seat. The current incumbent Rep. Kipp (see above) is running for the Colorado State Senate. Ms. Treick identifies as Christian and is an ally of our community.
Stephanie Vigil ran for re-election to the Colorado State House in District 16. She lost by three votes. She has served in Colorado State House since 2023. Rep. Vigil was unopposed in the Democratic primary on June 25. She is a secular humanist, an exvangelical, and an atheist.
Frank Burns won election to the Delaware State House in District 21. Dr. Burns won the September 10 Democratic primary with 50.67% of the vote and won the general election with 58% of the vote. He ran for this seat and almost defeated the Republican incumbent, Michael Ramone, by earning 49.8% of the vote in 2022. The Republican incumbent ran for Governor (and lost), so this was an open seat. Dr. Burns is a humanist and a member of the Unitarian Universalist Society of Mill Creek.
Eric Morrison won re-election to the Delaware State House in District 27. He has served in Delaware State House since 2020. He won the September 10 Democratic primary with 60% of the vote and the general election with 56% of the vote. Rep. Morrison is an atheist and humanist.
Madinah Wilson-Anton won re-election to the Delaware State House in District 26. She has served in Delaware State House since 2020. She was unopposed in the Democratic primary on September 10 and in the general election. Rep. Wilson-Anton is a Muslim and ally of our community.
Eleanor Holmes Norton won re-election to the U.S. House Non-Voting Delegate District of Columbia. She won the Democratic primary against a challenger on June 4 earning 80% of the vote and the general election with 81% of the vote. Rep. Norton is an Episcopalian and an ally of our community.
Robert White won re-election to the Council of the District of Columbia At-Large. He won the Democratic primary against a challenger on June 4 earning 82% of the vote and the general election with 62% of the vote. Councilmember White is Catholic and an ally of our community.
Vance Ahrens ran for the Florida State Senate (District 19). She was unopposed in the Democratic primary on August 20 and earned 40% of the vote in the general election. The Republican incumbent, Debbie Mayfield, was unopposed in 2022, and did not seeking re-election in 2024. Ms. Ahrens is an atheist.
Ben Braver ran for the Florida State Senate (District 23). He was unopposed in the Democratic primary on August 20 and earned 38% of the vote in the general election. The incumbent in this seat is Republican Daniel Burgess, who won with 63% of the vote in 2022. Mr. Braver is Jewish and secular.
Ashley Brundage ran for the Florida State House of Representatives (District 65). She won the Democratic primary on August 20 with 81% of the vote and lost the general election with 43% of the vote. The incumbent in this seat is Republican Karen Gonzalez Pittman, who won in 2022 with 54% of the vote. Ms. Brundage is a non-practicing Jewish woman.
Doris H. Carroll ran for the Florida State House of Representatives (District 21). She was unopposed in the Democratic primary on August 20 and earned 38% of the vote in the general election. The incumbent in this seat is Republican Ed Hooper, who won in 2022 with 65% of the vote. Ms. Carroll is a humanist.
Karl Cieslak ran for the Florida State House of Representatives (District 54). He was unopposed in the Democratic primary on August 20 and earned 40% of the vote in the general election. The incumbent in this seat is Republican Randy Maggard, who won in 2022 with 62% of the vote. Mr. Cieslak is an Episcopalian and an ally of our community.
Anna Eskamani won re-election to the Florida House of Representatives (District 42). She was unopposed in the Democratic primary is on August 20 and won with 58% of the vote in the general election. In 2022, she won with 57% of the vote. The majority of Eskamani’s family identifies with Islam, but she is secular.
Maxwell Frost won re-election to the U.S. Congress in Florida’s 10th District. He won the Democratic primary on August 20 against two challengers with 82% of the vote and the general election with 62% of the vote. Rep. Frost is a Baptist and an ally of our community.
Barbie Harden Hall ran for the U.S. Congress in Florida’s 11th District. She was unopposed in the Democratic primary on August 20 and earned 40% of the vote in the general election. The incumbent in this seat is Republican Daniel Webster, who won with 63% of the vote in 2022. Ms. Hall was raised Christian and is an ally of our community.
Sarah Henry ran for the Florida House of Representatives (District 38). She was unopposed in the Democratic primary on August 20 and earned 49.6% of the vote in the general election. The incumbent in this seat is Republican David Smith. Ms. Henry ran against Smith in 2022 and earned 48% of the vote. She worked at the American Humanist Association and is nonreligious.
Marilyn Holleran ran for the Florida State Senate (District 11). She was unopposed in the Democratic primary on August 20 and earned 31% of the vote in the general election. The incumbent in this seat is Republican Blaise Ingoglia, who did not have a Democratic opponent in 2022 and won with 64% of the vote in 2020. Raised Catholic, Ms. Holleran is against organized religion as it has caused so much strife throughout history.
Rosemarie Latham ran for the Florida House of Representatives (District 29). She was unopposed in the Democratic primary on August 20 and earned 41.5% of the vote in the general election. The incumbent in this seat is Republican Webster Barnably, who won in 2022 with 60% of the vote. Ms. Latham was raised Catholic and is an ally of our community.
Gary McManus ran for the Florida House of Representatives (District 15). The incumbent in this seat is Republican Dean Blank, who was unopposed in 2022. Mr. McManus was unopposed in the Democratic primary on August 20 and earned 35% of the vote in the general election. He is a Roman Catholic and an ally of our community.
Adam Morley ran for the Florida House of Representatives (District 19). He was unopposed in the Democratic primary on August 20 and earned 39% of the vote in the general election. The Republican incumbent is not running for re-election. Mr. Morley ran for this seat in 2022 and earned 36% of the vote. He is an agnostic.
Anthony Nieves ran for the Florida House of Representatives (District 47). He finished third of three candidates with 31% of the vote in the Democratic primary on August 20. The incumbent in this seat is Republican Paula Stark. Mr. Nieves ran against Stark in 2022 and earned 49% of the vote. He is a lapsed Catholic and is an ally of our community.
Andi Poli ran for the Florida House of Representatives (District 84). She was unopposed in the Democratic primary on August 20 and earned 42% of the vote in the general election. The incumbent in this seat is Republican Dana Trabulsy, who won in 2022 with 61% of the vote. Ms. Poli was raised Methodist and is an ally of our community.
Marcos Reyes ran for the Florida House of Representatives (District 119). He was unopposed in the Democratic primary on August 20 and earned 35% of the vote in the general election. The incumbent in this seat is Republican Juan Carlos Porras. Mr. Reyes is a non-practicing Catholic and an ally of our community.
Carlos Guillermo Smith won election to the Florida State Senate in District 17. He was unopposed in the Democratic primary on August 20, as well as, in the general election on November 5. The Democratic incumbent, Linda Stewart, was term limited so this was an open seat. Smith served in the Florida House of Representatives from 2016 to 2022. He is an agnostic.
Amy Trask ran for the Florida House of Representatives (District 22). She finished second of two candidates in the Democratic primary on August 20 earning 43% of the vote. This is an open seat. In 2022, the Republican incumbent won with 56% of the vote. Ms. Trask is “spiritual and an adventurer.”
Michael “Erika Rose” Travis ran for the Florida House of Representatives (District 120). He was unopposed in the Democratic primary on August 20 and earned 37% of the vote in the general election. The incumbent in this seat is Republican Jim Mooney. When asked about religion, Michael answers “other.”
Katherine Waldron ran for re-election to the Florida House of Representatives (District 93). She was unopposed in the Democratic primary is on August 20, but lost the general election earning 49.8% of the vote. Rep. Waldron is Catholic and an ally of our community.
Charles Work ran for the Florida House of Representatives (District 81). He was unopposed in the Democratic primary on August 20 and earned 32% of the vote in the general election. The Republican incumbent, Bob Rommel, did not seeking re-election. In 2022, Rommel was unopposed, and in 2020 he won with 66% of the vote. Mr. Work is a Presbyterian and an ally of our community.
Robin Biro ran for the Georgia State Senate in District 55. He finished third in the 5-person Democratic primary on May 21 earning 22% of the vote. Mr. Biro is a Quaker and ally of our community.
Anthia Carter ran for the Georgia State House in District 47. She finished second in the 2-person Democratic primary on May 21 earning 34% of the vote. In 2020, she challenged the Republican incumbent and earned 40% of the vote. Ms. Carter is a Christian and ally of our community.
Antonio Daza ran for the U.S. Congress in Georgia’s 11th District. The Republican incumbent is Barry Loudermilk. Mr. Daza ran for this seat in 2022 and earned 37% of the vote. He came in second in the two-person Democratic primary on May 21 earning 43% of the vote. Mr. Daza is an atheist.
Micheal Garza ran for the Georgia State House in District 46. He was unopposed in the Democratic primary on May 21 and earned 41.5% of the vote in the general election. In 2022, Mr. Garza ran against the Republican incumbent, John Carson, and earned 40% of the vote. He is Catholic and an ally of our community.
Nate Green ran for the Georgia State Senate in District 38. He finished third in the 6-person Democratic primary on May 21 earning 20% of the vote. Mr. Green is a Christian and ally of our community.
Hank Johnson won re-election to the U.S. Congress in Georgia’s 4th District. He was unopposed in the Democratic primary on May 21 and won with 80% of the vote in the general election. Rep. Johnson is a Buddhist and ally of our community.
JD Jordan ran for the Georgia State Senate in District 56. He was unopposed in the Democratic primary is on May 21 and earned 39% of the vote in the general election. He challenged Republican incumbent John Albers who won re-election in 2022 with 62% of the vote. Mr. Jordan is an atheist.
Cathy Kott ran for the Georgia State House in District 6. She was unopposed in the Democratic primary is on May 21 and earned 15% of the vote in the general election. She challenged Republican incumbent Jason Ridley who has not had a Democratic opponent since he took office in 2016. Ms. Kott is a non-denominational Christian and an ally of our community.
Lillia M. Lionel ran for the Georgia State Senate in District 21. She won the Democratic primary on May 21 with 52% of the vote and earned 29% of the vote in the general election. She challenged Republican incumbent Brandon Beach who was unopposed in 2022. Ms. Lionel is a non-denominational Christian and an ally of our community.
Anne Allen Westbrook won re-election to the Georgia House of Representatives in District 163. She was unopposed in the Democratic primary on May 21 and in the general election too. Rep. Westbrook is a progressive Christian and an ally of our community.
Heather Rose White ran for the Georgia State House in District 131. She was unopposed in the Democratic primary on May 21 and earned 35% of the vote in the general election. This was an open seat. The Republican incumbent won re-election in 2020 with 75% of the vote. Ms. White is an agnostic.
Desiré DeSoto ran for the Hawaii State House in District 45. She won the Democratic primary on August 10 (against three opponents) with 55% of the vote, but only earned 48% of the vote in the general election. The Democratic incumbent, Cedric Gates, is running for the State Senate. He won the seat with 55% of the vote in 2022. Ms. DeSoto is spiritual but not religious.
David Roth ran for the U.S. Congress in Idaho’s 2nd District. He was unopposed in the Democratic primary on May 21 and earned 33% of the vote in the general election. Mr. Roth challenged Republican incumbent Michael Simpson. Mr. Roth is Lutheran and an ally of our community.
Sean Casten won re-election to the U.S. Congress in Illinois’ 6th District. He won the Democratic primary on March 19 against two opponents with 77% of the vote and the general election with 53% of the vote. Rep. Casten is an ally of our community.
Heidi Henry ran for the Illinois House of Representatives in District 75. She challenged Republican incumbent Jed Davis. She ran against him in 2022 and earned 39% of the vote. Ms. Henry was unopposed in the Democratic primary on March 19 and earned 38% of the vote. She is an Episcopalian and an ally of our community.
Randi Olson ran for the Illinois House of Representatives in District 70. She challenged the Republican incumbent Jeff Keicher who won in 2022 with 58% of the vote. Ms. Olson was unopposed in the Democratic primary on March 19 and earned 40% of the vote in the general election. She is an agnostic.
Maria Peterson ran for the Illinois House of Representatives in District 52. She challenged Republican incumbent Martin McLaughlin. She was unopposed in the Democratic primary on March 19 and lost by just 47 votes in the general election. Ms. Peterson is non-religious.
Jan Schakowsky won re-election to the U.S. Congress in Illinois’ 9th District. She was unopposed in the Democratic primary is on March 19 and won with 67% of the vote in the general election. Rep. Schakowsky is Jewish and an ally of our community.
Jackie Williamson ran for the Illinois House of Representatives in District 47. She challenged Republican incumbent Amy Grant. Ms. Williamson ran against Grant in 2022 and earned 47% of the vote and in 2024 she earned 49.6% of the vote. Ms. Williamson was unopposed in the Democratic primary on March 19. She is an agnostic.
Sue Errington won re-election to the Indiana State House in District 34. She was unopposed in the May 7 Democratic primary and won with 55% of the vote in the general election. Rep. Errington is a Unitarian Universalist and an ally of our community.
Suzanne Fortenberry ran for the Indiana State Senate in District 36. She was unopposed in the May 7 Democratic primary and earned 37% of the vote in the general election.
