The 2026 Summer Internship

Join the Center for Freethought Equality, the political and advocacy arm of the American Humanist Association, and its affiliated political action committee (PAC), for an exciting full or part-time internship opportunity. As an intern, you will be vital in supporting legislative activities and PAC campaign endorsements for the 2026 elections. In addition, this internship offers valuable insights into the operations of a progressive nonprofit organization and provides exposure to national-level legislative and electoral politics.

Interns will receive compensation based on the District of Columbia living wage and can expect to work between 20 to 40 hours per week for 10 to 15 weeks.

The Center for Freethought Equality seeks to empower humanist, atheist, and agnostic Americans to actively participate in the political process. By making our values heard in Congress and supporting humanist, atheist, and allied candidates, we will advance policies for secular government, scientific integrity, reproductive freedom, LGBTQ+ rights, and civil rights for all Americans.

Duties include:

  • Track federal legislation

  • Prepare advocacy materials

  • Track federal, state, and local electoral races across the country

  • Maintain our databases and update files

  • Manage social media accounts and website content

Qualifications:

  • Strong interest in and basic understanding of progressive social policy.

  • Current college student or a recent graduate with interest, experience, and/or major in Political Science, Communications, Government, or Public Policy; or high school graduate who has experience in a campaign or political environment.

  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and capable of handling multiple projects simultaneously while adhering to project timelines.

  • Excellent verbal communication, writing, and computer skills are essential.
